Every year, the arrival of summer in Minnesota, while eagerly anticipated, also brings a sobering reality: the “100 deadliest days” on our roads. The team at the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) knew that to truly shift the needle on the tragic toll of traffic fatalities and serious injuries — an average of 162 lives lost each summer — a new, proactive approach was essential. They envisioned empowering law enforcement and first responders with tools that could anticipate and prevent crashes, rather than simply reacting to them.

This vision is now taking shape through an exciting initiative that extends the power of the Road Safety Information Center (RSIC). Built in partnership with Nerdery and powered by Google Cloud, RSIC is a cutting-edge data analytics platform designed to understand the “where, when, why, and how” of serious traffic incidents. Now, we’re taking this a step further in the St. Cloud region.

Think of it like this: Instead of just looking in the rearview mirror at past crashes, we’re using sophisticated technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence to see what might be around the next bend. By integrating multiple data sources – from historical crash reports to real-time traffic updates – RSIC can identify potential high-risk “hot spots” and start to understand which countermeasures have the greatest impact.

“The Road Safety Information Center exemplifies the power of collaboration and using modern technology to tackle complex challenges. By integrating advanced data analytics and real-time information, this platform equips traffic safety professionals, researchers and the public with invaluable insights. It is a significant step forward in our shared mission to use data to enhance road safety and protect the lives of all Minnesotans.”

— Tarek Tomes, commissioner of Minnesota IT services and the state’s chief information officer

What makes this initiative truly impactful is the “human in the loop” approach. We’re working hand-in-hand with the dedicated law enforcement professionals in the St. Cloud area – 18 organizations strong – to iteratively evaluate the predictive models. Their on-the-ground experience is invaluable in refining the technology and developing strategic action plans that are both data-informed and practically effective. This collaborative spirit, combined with RSIC’s analytical muscle, creates a powerful force for change.

For us at Nerdery, this project resonates deeply with our purpose: to relentlessly invent a world that works better for all. We believe that by harnessing the power of data analytics and fostering strong partnerships, we can move closer to the ultimate goal of zero deaths on Minnesota roads. This isn’t just about technology; it’s about empowering our communities and helping to ensure that everyone gets home safely.
