The Nerdery Announces Changes to Organizational Structure to Disrupt Legacy Processes

Minneapolis, June 5, 2017 — The Nerdery today announced an organizational restructuring to disrupt its legacy processes in order to better support current and future customers. The organizational changes led to the elimination of three job functions and 21 positions at The Nerdery’s Bloomington headquarters. The reduction represents 4 percent of staff and does not affect any of The Nerdery’s client-facing delivery team in terms of designers, engineers or strategists. The change was made with the goal of investing more heavily in talent and staff training to better serve The Nerdery’s customers.

“The pace of change in our industry is intensely fast. Larger competitors are trying to become the makers that we’ve always been,” said Nerdery CEO Tom O’Neill. “We have incredible opportunity to capitalize on our place in the industry, but we’ve got to be the agile company we promise to help our customers become.”

O’Neill added, “We came to a point where we had to ask ourselves, are we serving our customers or are we serving our business processes? Our answer is we need to break out of our self-imposed constraints. We’re no longer the company that merely executes small, one-off projects – we haven’t been that company for quite some time. Yet our structure hadn’t significantly changed, until now.”

Since the company began in 2003, The Nerdery has shifted from just designing and building software products to playing a more strategic role in clients’ businesses with a focus on business outcomes and driving value. With today’s organizational changes, The Nerdery will be structured to move more quickly to build the infrastructure to support the changing needs of customers.

“We’ll invest in Nerds who obsess on making things that matter for our partners. We’ll develop developers, designers and strategists who lead our clients to meaningful outcomes. We’ll move fast and constantly push boundaries as nimble Nerds in an agile company,” adds O’Neill.

Four of the impacted employees have been offered new positions within the company and the balance of the impacted employees are eligible to apply for any future positions available at The Nerdery.
