Fifth Time on Fast 50: The Nerdery on Biz Journal’s list of Twin Cities’ fastest growing private companies

Nine years after three programming pioneers founded the web development company with $200 between them, The Nerdery is #9 on Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal’s Fast 50 list, the publication’s annual rankings of fastest growing private companies in the Twin Cities. The Nerdery made the Fast 50 for its fifth consecutive year, moving upward in each successive year and finally now cracking the top ten for the first time.

The Nerdery previously on the Fast 50, year-by-year:
Here’s Biz Journal’s Q&A with Nerdery CEO Mike Derheim:

Biz Journal: Have you sought financing from new or alternate sources in the past year?
Mike Derheim: No, we continue to be self-funded by reinvesting our profit.

Biz Journal: What are you looking forward to most in the coming fiscal year?
Mike Derheim: We’re excited to continue expanding our UX team, grow our services in technical strategy and consulting and continue to make the most talented development and engineering minds the midwest has to offer available to our partners. Growth breeds opportunity for every Nerd at The Nerdery. The interactive capabilities we have today came from inspired people who followed their passion and became the guru of something they love doing – they became leaders. These leadership leaps have founded entire new departments that provide clients with cutting edge interactive services. It’s gratifying to be able to keep creating so many personal and professional growth opportunities.

Biz Journal: What is the biggest challenge your company will face in the coming year?
Mike Derheim: We anticipate a challenge we’re pretty used to by now – staying ahead of our growth with the physical space we need for more Nerds. And, of course, finding ample super-smart people while upholding our admittedly finicky recruiting standards. We also have to not only preserve our culture, but keep furthering it in our organic, grassroots way that gives every Nerd the open opportunity to further shape and enhance our shared culture.

Biz Journal: Are you profitable?
Mike Derheim: Yes

Biz Journal: Compare your company to a superhero.
Mike Derheim: Our company is built around a collective of smart people and as such we’re less akin to a single superhero than we are to a group like The Avengers or The X-Men. Our real strength comes from the interplay and cooperation between the individual powers of the amazing team of Nerds that have assembled in an unassuming, mild-mannered office building in Bloomington, MN. Our mission is to actively seek out extraordinary people and empower as Nerds.
