Fourteen Chicago Nonprofits and Teams Selected for 2017 Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge

Chicago, March 1, 2017 — The Nerdery and The Nerdery Foundation today announced nonprofit and team selections for The Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge. During the 24-hour hackathon taking place March 18-19, 14 volunteer web pro teams will donate their time to design and develop new websites or mobile apps for their 14 nonprofit partners.

The signature community service event from The Nerdery and The Nerdery Foundation will take place at The Nerdery’s Chicago office beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 18 and ending 9 a.m. Sunday, March 19. Nonprofits applied for this pro-bono opportunity by articulating their vision of how nerds could further their organization’s mission through better use of interactive technology, and rallying their constituents and fans to post online testimonials supporting their nomination. Development teams self-organized with 6-12 volunteers covering skill sets required to build a website, including front-end development, back-end development, project management, digital/content strategy, user experience design, graphic design and quality assurance engineering.

The following nonprofits were chosen for the opportunity to lead a team of software engineers and designers to further their organization’s mission through technology:

Nonprofits will be paired with the following web pro teams during a pre-event mixer on March 8, also at The Nerdery.

Teams and nonprofits will reconvene April 5 to share their nerdy deeds and demo their work at Web Challenge Awards night. Top teams are recognized for Design/UX, Functionality, and Impact. The People’s Choice award is crowd-sourced via public voting, based on before/after screenshots, links to new websites and testimonials from nonprofit reps and web pros. Top prize remains bragging rights, and the gratification of nerdy deeds done in the name of community service.
