Mike Derheim, CFO of the Year Finalist, Business Journal
Biz Journal
Editors note: This survey was done prior to Sierra Bravo CEO Luke Bucklin’s death. Mike Derheim is now CEO.
What do you enjoy most about being a CFO?
It’s exciting to be one of the first people to see a good idea take shape.
What ideas have you brought to the company?
My best ideas lead to giving Nerdery staff real-time access to information. I’m a huge data nerd.
What is the big challenge you face as CFO? As we’ve grown I’ve delegated some duties and it’s challenging to lack intimate knowledge of others’ investment priorities – I wrestle with financial decisions that used to be easy.
How do you start your day?
I’ll take a spin around The Nerdery and just see what’s going on with people. Checking in helps me understand what others have as priorities for the day. Usually, this gives me a heads-up on what my day might look like.
Let’s say you were in one of those bad-TV, let’s-switch-jobs scenarios. What would the person who took YOUR job be most surprised about?
They’d be surprised to find how many different, unrelated things they’d have to think about and do. Some of it’s very un-CFO-like, and yeah, I like it that way.
Was math your best subject in school?
Not even close. Math was my least favorite by a wide margin. My best subject was English. My place has much more to do with my conservative financial values than my talent with numbers.
