The Nerdery in the news - see how we hold up to media scrutiny

120 industries show big growth

Biz Journal story by Katharine Grayson

Tech industries still growing

One fast-growing tech firm, The Nerdery, plans to hire between 50 and 60 additional employees over the coming year, adding to its existing staff of about 225, said Mike Derheim, CEO.

The Nerdery, based in Bloomington, gets plenty of applicants for its positions, but it can be challenging to find people with the right skill set, he said.

Of course, some industries also aren’t easily categorized, and new fields can emerge over the course of a decade.

The Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association (MIMA) recently compiled data showing that employment in the “new media/communications” industry in Minnesota rose from 1,280 in 2006 to 2,640 in 2009. Jobs in that field, such as “social media manager,” are recent creations, said Tim Brunelle, CEO of Minneapolis-based interactive agency Hello Viking, and president of MIMA.

“We’re seeing new-fangled job titles that didn’t even exist two years ago being advertised for at Fortune 500 companies,” he said.
